We have the first grid-forming standalone battery resources at scale in the world that are able to respond in milliseconds to the markets’ needs. Our projects also provide critical grid services and have acted as the assets of last resort in wholesale markets, allowing the grid to continue functioning at times of stress and record peak loads.

Plus Power is operating 7 projects in Hawaii, Texas, and Arizona, and has developed 2 projects in Texas that are currently operating and owned by others. Plus Power currently has 2 more projects in construction. We leverage best-in-class capabilities from greenfield development through market and power system analysis, origination, finance, engineering & procurement, construction management, and operational asset management.

Ensuring Power Reliability

The power grid is under stress. Half of Americans now risk blackouts that cost $150 billion per year and damage our job-creating industries. In 2021, Texas came within 5 minutes of shutting down their power grid for weeks.

Our power grid, in all regions of the U.S., now needs grid stabilizers which Plus Power is delivering with standalone battery power plants.

Standalone batteries uniquely offer both kinds of grid stabilization: ancillary services provided over seconds to maintain grid performance, and stored energy over hours to delivery during energy scarcity events.

The project, which began commercial operations in June 2024, holds up to 250 MW / 1,000 MWh of battery energy capacity, providing enhanced grid reliability and directly supporting the incoming Prime Data Center campus next door.

The 250 MW Sierra Estrella facility, on nine acres in Avondale, became the largest standalone battery system in Arizona when it went online earlier this month, SRP said. It will store enough energy to power more than 56,000 residences for four hours. The 90 MG Superstition Energy facility in Gilbert will store enough power for 20,000 homes for four hours.

Phoenix set a record of 31 straight days of 110-degree temperatures in July 2023, the hottest month ever for a U.S. city. The grid needs fast flexibility to adapt, namely storage. Plus Power’s 250 MW / 1000 MWh Sierra Estrella Energy Storage project in Avondale has a 20-year contract with Salt River Project (SRP). Sierra Estrella absorbs and holds lower-cost energy until demand rises. The facility serves as critical grid infrastructure to support the adjacent Prime Data Center campus.
